Offbeat North Kolkata — The Lanes Nobody Maps

Spent his twenties in data analytics at an international bank — tracking numbers that described cities he'd never visited. Came back to the North Kolkata lanes he grew up in and found them more interesting than anything in between. He knows which doorway leads where, which wall has a story, and which lane most people walk past without realising what they've missed.

North Kolkata — People, Stories & the Living City

Grew up in North Kolkata and still lives in it — not just geographically. Works in customer support, which means she reads people well and knows what someone needs before they ask. In the lanes she's known since childhood, she knows the faces as well as the places.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about safety, booking, visas and the best time to visit Kolkata.

Kolkata is consistently ranked among India's safest major cities. Locals are famously warm and will go out of their way to help a visitor. We recommend the standard urban precautions — keep valuables close, drink bottled water, use reputable transport — but in seven years of operation we have had zero safety incidents on any tour.

October through March is perfect — dry, relatively cool, and alive with festivals. Durga Puja in October transforms the entire city into an open-air art installation. December brings Christmas carols and colonial-era nostalgia to Park Street. Avoid May and June, which are intensely hot. The monsoon (July–September) is lush and moody — beautiful, but logistically challenging.

Most nationalities qualify for an e-Visa, applied for online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. It costs $25–80 depending on your passport and is typically approved within 3 business days. US, UK, EU, Australian and most Asian nationals all qualify. Your guide can answer any pre-arrival questions on WhatsApp.

Indian Rupees (INR). International ATMs are widely available across Kolkata, and your guide accepts the tour balance in cash or by card. For small food and market purchases, carry some small INR notes — most street vendors don't carry change for large bills.

Absolutely — Bengali cuisine is naturally generous to vegetarians, and most Kolkata restaurants adapt well to vegan and gluten-free needs. Please note any allergies, intolerances, or dietary preferences in your booking notes. Just give us 24 hours' advance notice so your guide can plan accordingly.

Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your tour start time — we'll refund your deposit in full, no questions asked. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the tour are non-refundable. We understand that travel plans change, so please reach out early if something comes up.

Every tour is 100% private — just your party and your dedicated guide. No strangers, no shared itineraries, no rushing to keep up with a group. The route, pace, and focus of the day are yours to shape. We never mix bookings.

Our guides collectively speak English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Bengali. Please mention your preferred language when booking and we'll match you with the right guide. All guides are fluent in English as a baseline.
